The Vet. My New Favorite Place Apparently.

Imagine this. You are driving home late one night with your beloved pet sitting in the passenger seat of the car. It's dark but you notice she seems to be keeping her eyes closed a lot and seems sensitive around the face. You flick on the overhead light and call your pup, who ever so sweetly turns into the light looking like this:

"Mom my eye hurts."

"It's itchy." Obviously not expecting this, you try not to scream in terror that your dog suddenly looks like quasimoto. Afterall, your dog will imitate your mood and you need your ailing puppy calm. Try not to think about your pet going blind until you are in front of a laptop with internet or a veterinary professional. At the very least, try to focus on driving more than the alien eye that you can't do anything about at the moment.

I googled away when I got home. I saw that she acted relatively comfortably, although itchy and depth-perception impaired, unless she was looking at ME and my worried expression when I examined her face. So I resisted the urge to rush her to a 24 hour emergency vet (truthfully I couldn't find one) and waited until morning for my vet to open. She's been poked and prodded and examined with flourescent dye in her eye and the verdict is: pink eye. No blindness involved (yay). She's got some pills and drops to take.

Meanwhile Sphinx's diagnosis is confirmed following her cat fight this Christmas: ringworm. So, her semi-quarantine and twice-a-day drops for her skin will continue for another four to six weeks! Wow, and she hates them....

I seriously have to go out and buy a calendar now for the pet's ailments. I have two sets of drops and one set of pills, each with different per-day and for how-long for my two sick pets. Sphinx has rule of the upstairs and Sahara has the downstairs. I don't want to end up with two pets who BOTH have ringworm and pink eye.

Poor babies! Sorry they have been ailing. Our little Casey had the doggie flu over New Year's...both ends...not fun. She lost 4 ounces which for her is like Sahara losing 20! She got drugs though (just finished her last one last night) and is much better.

Good luck with all the drops and pills. Lots of snuggles works, too :)

Aww I'm glad your puppy is better too. Thanks- I'll be glad when they're both better and can romp around happily again.

I hope the kiddoes are feelin better soon!

Joey recommends that Sahara licks, or asks Sphinx to lick, her eye. This is his version of the Dad from My Big Fat Greek Wedding's love of Windex. Anytime I reported my foot hurting, Dr. Joey would pounce over and lick my toes. Then one day, when I commented my left contact was a little dry, he promptly offered the same service. Personally, I recommend the eye drops, but to each their own!

Thanks everyone! Sahara is much better after her first few rounds of drops and pills. She's happy and almost all healthy again, and her eye is almost complete back to normal. She's got a few weeks worth of medicine to make sure the infection is all gone.

Cindy- Sahara is a big supporter of the licking remedies. She has tried to kindly lick the bald ringworm patch on Sphinx' neck several times because the medicine makes it smell funny. But as the attending human who knows how contagious ringworm is, I basically shoo Sahara away whenever she gets within two feet of Sphinxy. Same is true for Sahara's pink eye condition now. Basically the rule in my house for now is "no one be near anyone else!"

Poor Sahara! She looks freaky! Haha. At least her and Sphinx are sick together!
